What is Cacao?

Food of the Gods

Cacao—also known as chocolate—is a truly delicious “food of the gods”, which is the translation of its scientific name: Theobroma Cacao. This rich plant medicine is packed with powerful compounds that support the body to balance, regulate mood, and enhance both physical and spiritual energy.

Once harvested, the pods are opened and the white pulp and seeds inside are removed. These beans are then fermented for around two weeks, sun-dried, roasted, and husked.

What remains is a pure paste made by pounding the inner beans—this is 100% cacao, the same plant matter revered and consumed for thousands of years by Mesoamerican and South American cultures.

‘As a medicine’

This cacao paste is traditionally mixed with hot water to be enjoyed as a beverage. Without further processing, cacao retains a rich and diverse medicinal profile that the body can easily assimilate—offering a wide range of benefits.

As you get to know me, you’ll hear me speak of Cacao as a Spirit—an energy with a mission to restore beauty and harmonize the hearts of humanity

‘There’s a deeper truth, than that of all the physical properties of cacao.  There is a spirit, an energy, a force that wants to communicate, if one sits quiet enough, if they listen, they will learn’

In ancient cultures, cacao was considered so precious it was used as currency, as offerings to the gods and nature, in ceremonies to commune with other realms, for strength, clarity, endurance in hunting, as an aphrodisiac, and even in human sacrifice rituals.

When missionaries entered these communities, they witnessed how the people revered this sacred plant.

As scouts for valuable resources, they brought cacao back to kings and queens, where it was handed to the alchemists in royal kitchens. From there began its long journey of adulteration—evolving into the conventional chocolate most of us know today, which is often highly processed with sugars and additives that limit our body’s ability to receive cacao’s true medicine.

These days, Cacao is making her way back into hearts and hands through ceremonies, circles, and meditation. People are gathering in reverence once again—honouring cacao not just as a drink, but as an ally.

In doing so, we rekindle our connection to the Earth and to ourselves as nature.
